How To Get To Louisville

Louisville is conveniently located in the heart of the Midwest, making it an easy road trip destination from many major cities. It’s about two hours from both Indianapolis and Cincinnati, and roughly three hours from Nashville.

Travelers coming from farther away can fly into Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), located just 10 minutes from downtown. The airport is small and easy to navigate, with major car rental companies available on-site. Once in the city, most attractions in this itinerary are within a short drive or walk from the downtown area, so you can easily explore without needing to relocate constantly.

Day One: Exploring the Heart of Louisville

Tip: Parking is very expensive at this hotel with it ranging anywhere from $22-$40 a night, however there is plenty of nearby street parking that is free!

Kentucky Science Center

Spread across three floors, the center features interactive exhibits that make science come alive—from exploring the wonders of space and engineering to experimenting with physics, health, and the natural world. Families can dive into immersive learning experiences, including a water table for younger children, a makerspace for budding inventors, and a four-story digital theater that brings science films to life on the big screen.

  • Plan to spend two to three hours here, especially if you have young explorers in tow.
  • There is a Subway inside the Science Museum so families can grab lunch if needed.
  • Try to find street parking ( which is free on Sundays). If not there is a Parking Garage behind the Science Center.
  • Tip: The Kentucky Science Center participates in the ASTC Passport Program, which means visitors with memberships at participating science museums can enjoy free or discounted admission—making it an even more affordable stop for families who love exploring and learning together.

Dinner: High Stakes Rooftop

At High Stakes Grill, we kicked off the evening with their signature Espresso-Tucky-Tini—a playful Kentucky twist on the classic espresso martini, made smooth and indulgent with bourbon cream. It was the perfect blend of rich coffee flavor and local flair.

For appetizers, we couldn’t resist the deviled eggs, which were perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented, and for the main course, the steak was cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and expertly prepared. With its inviting rooftop atmosphere and creative menu, High Stakes Grill delivered an unforgettable Louisville dining experience.

Evening Stroll: Waterfront Par

Tip: If you have time, walk across the Big Four Bridge—it’s pedestrian-only and connects Kentucky and Indiana.

  • Book tickets ahead of time – Tours can fill up, especially on weekends and during summer, so reserving your spot online ensures you won’t miss out.
  • Arrive a little early – The museum portion has fun interactive exhibits, photo ops with giant bats, and baseball memorabilia that are worth exploring before your tour begins.

The Louisville Zoo is the perfect spot for a family day out. It’s both fun and educational, so we could explore, learn, and make memories all in one place.

  • Arrive early to catch the animals when they’re most active and to enjoy shorter lines at popular exhibits.
  • Comfortable shoes are a must, as the zoo covers a lot of ground and includes some hilly areas.
  • Don’t miss the interactive experiences, like the Giraffe Feeding Deck or the Lorikeet Landing, which are especially fun for kids.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, or take advantage of shaded rest areas and indoor exhibits to stay cool on warmer days.
  • Finally, check the zoo’s schedule for animal talks, feedings, and seasonal events, which add an extra layer of excitement to your visit.

Evening Adventure: Jack O’Lantern Spectacular

As night falls, head to the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular—one of Louisville’s most magical fall events. Stroll through a glowing forest in Iroquois Park filled with over 5,000 artist-carved pumpkins. Walking along the lit trails, you’ll be amazed by thousands of intricately carved pumpkins, from classic faces to elaborate, themed displays that tell stories as you go. The event is family-friendly, with whimsical scenes for the little ones and impressive, larger-than-life carvings that wow adults.

Tips:

  • Timed-tickets must be purchased in advanced through Ticketmaster.
  • Go early in the evening to beat the crowds and bring a stroller for younger kids.
  • Expect to wait an hour past your ticket time before you enter the show.
  • There is food and drinks available for purchase.
  • The trail is not paved, but strollers can be used. Expect it to be a bit bumpy.
  • Don’t touch the pumpkins. What is sad is I saw more grown adults touching the pumpkins then kids.
  • Parking is free at the park.

Day Three: Underground Adventure Before Heading Home

For a simple and satisfying breakfast in Louisville, Moonsong Bakery is the perfect stop. Their freshly baked pastries and expertly brewed coffee are a delicious way to start the day, with flavors that feel homemade and comforting. We stuck to the pastries and coffee—and honestly, that’s all you need here—so we passed on the rest of the menu, which didn’t quite live up to the bakery’s standout baked goods.

Kentucky Mega Cavern

Explore an underground world unlike any other. The Kentucky Mega Cavern offers zip lines, an underground tram tour, and seasonal light displays—all inside a massive former limestone mine.

What to Expect: The tram tour is ideal for families and runs about 75 minutes.
Tip: Bring a light jacket—it stays a cool 58°F year-round underground.
