Family-Friendly Things to Do in Townsend, TN

Spread the love

Known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies,” Townsend, Tennessee, is the quieter gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s the ideal destination for families who want to experience the beauty of the Smokies without the heavy crowds of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. From outdoor adventures to cultural attractions, Townsend offers plenty of family-friendly activities that are fun, educational, and easy on the budget. Here are some of the best things to do in Townsend, TN, with kids.

Things to do in Townsend, TN, with kids

After years of visiting Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, I had grown weary of the crowds, relentless traffic, and over-tourism the area has experienced. Swearing off the Smoky Mountains as a family retreat, I went in skeptical of visiting Townsend, but left with a renewed spirit as the small town captured my heart. If you are looking for majestic mountain views surrounded by opportunities to reconnect with nature, Townsend, TN, will not disappoint.

Where is Townsend, TN

Just 20 miles from Pigeon Forge and about 25 miles from Gatlinburg, Townsend is close enough to all the big attractions yet feels like a world away from the crowds. Getting there is simple: from Knoxville, it’s an easy drive down Alcoa Highway through Maryville, then straight onto Lamar Alexander Parkway (US 321) right into town.

Cades Cove Loop

Families coming from Pigeon Forge will love the scenic drive over Wears Valley Road, where rolling hills and mountain views set the tone for adventure. Whether you’re road-tripping in or flying into Knoxville’s airport just a short drive away, Townsend makes the perfect home base for exploring the Smokies at a slower, more peaceful pace.

And once you arrive, you’ll quickly see why this hidden gem is ideal for families—let’s dive into a kid-friendly itinerary that makes the most of a weekend in Townsend.

Cades Cove Scenic Loop

Cades Cove is one of the most popular spots in the Smokies—and for good reason. The 11-mile loop is filled with historic cabins, churches, and barns that bring history to life for kids. Wildlife sightings are common, so keep your camera ready for deer, turkeys, and sometimes even black bears.

Cades Cove Loop

Family Tip: Drive the loop early in the morning to avoid crowds and increase your chances of spotting animals. On vehicle-free days, families can bring bikes and enjoy the loop safely.

Helpful Tips:

  • The loop can become very congested, taking nearly four hours to complete, as it moves at a snail’s pace. Ensure you have a full tank of gas before embarking on this adventure.
  • Cades Cove Loop Road is open sunrise to sunset each day, but closed to vehicles each Wednesday, typically from May through September.
  • Consider packing a picnic to enjoy at one of the pull-offs.
  • Download or print out this map to help you navigate the loop.
  • Roughly halfway through the Cades Cove Loop Road is the Cades Cove Visitors Center with restrooms, historic structures, and exhibits.
  • While the Cades Cove loop offers beautiful views with a slice of history, I personally prefer the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, as I feel it is more scenic.

Tubing on the Little River

In the summer, tubing is a must-do! The Little River runs right through Townsend and is calm enough for families with kids. Local outfitters provide tubes, life jackets, and shuttles, making it an easy and affordable activity. Kids will love floating downstream, splashing in shallow areas, and enjoying a break from the heat.

River Rat Tubes for kids

River Rat is one of our favorite outfitters because it runs like a well-oiled machine. Reserve a tube to float down the Little River or go on a bigger adventure by going whitewater rafting.

Family Tip: Pack water shoes and waterproof sunscreen. Most tubing companies recommend that children be at least 5 years old to participate.

Don’t miss cooling off by tubing down the Little River

Helpful Tips For River Tubing:

  • One thing I loved about River Rat is that the tubes for kids have a bottom, so you aren’t worried about them slipping through.
  • Bring watershoes. They sell them there, but expect a significant markup. We went in sandals, but if you have to navigate low-water areas and pull your tube, it can get slippery and hard to get a sound footing.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen! While portions of the river are shady, the sun can be brutal.
  • It typically takes 2-3 hours to float downstream, and then the River Rat bus will bring you back!
  • If you miss your reservation time, you can often come late unless you are the final float time.
  • Check the water level before arriving, as specific age groups can go in at higher water levels. If water levels are too high, tubing may be cancelled for the day.
  • Dogs are allowed on specific tubing routes.

Tuckaleechee Caverns

Step underground into one of the most impressive caves in the country. Tuckaleechee Caverns feature massive underground rooms, sparkling formations, and even a 210-foot underground waterfall. With a cool 58-degree temperature year-round, it’s a great way to beat the summer heat while giving kids a science lesson they’ll never forget.

Family Tip: The tour involves walking and climbing stairs, so please bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket.

Helpful Tips:

  • The caves are open March-November.
  • Children 4 and under are free.
  • One of the tour’s highlights is the spectacular Big Room, which is longer and wider than a football field.
  • The cavern temperature is approximately 58°F, so bring a light jacket or sweatshirt.
  • Tours last approximately one to one and a half hours.
  • You don’t need reservations. Show up, and you’ll be placed on the next available tour.

Go Horseback Riding

One of our daughters’ favorite activities was Horseback Riding in Townsend, TN. We did a tour with Davy Crockett Riding Stables, which offers guided trail rides that wind through rolling hills, peaceful forests, and open meadows. Even beginners and children can join in, as most tours are designed to be family-friendly and led by experienced guides who ensure everyone feels comfortable. An hour tour was more than enough for our family, but they offer various trail rides, including half-day rides.

Helpful Tips:

  • Make reservations in advance, especially on weekends or holidays. Many of the slots will fill up.
  • I recommend wearing pants, as the horses can scrape against trees and limbs, which helps keep flies off you.
  • You will need closed-toe shoes.
  • Men, consider leaving your wallet in the car to prevent having to sit on it in the saddle for the duration of your ride.
  • Don’t forget to bring cash to tip your guide.
  • Go to the bathroom before hitting the trail.

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

This interactive museum introduces families to the history and culture of the Smokies. Exhibits include Native American artifacts, pioneer cabins, and hands-on displays that bring history to life. The outdoor historic village is enjoyable for kids who love exploring.

Family Tip: Check the center’s calendar for seasonal events and concerts, which add even more fun to your visit.

Little River Railroad Museum

Step back in time to discover how the railroad shaped Townsend and neighboring communities at the Little River Railroad Museum. Small but mighty, this FREE museum showcases historic artifacts, a restored Shay engine used for logging, and other fascinating railroad memorabilia.

Little ones will love the electric trains greeting them as they enter the depot that houses the museum. Don’t forget to ring the train bell!

Helpful Tips:

  • The grounds and outdoor exhibits are always available.
  • November through March: Closed Off-Season. Groups by appointment only (email or call)
  • April: Weekends Only – Saturday 10-5, Sunday 1-5
  • May-Oct open Daily Weekdays & Saturday 10-5, Sunday 1-5
  • The inside museum is small but packed with a wealth of information. Guests expect to visit for 10 minutes to an hour, depending on their level of interest in the materials.

  • Drive through the scenic Smoky Mountains with stops at Meigs Falls and The Sinks for hiking.

Family Tip: Pack snacks, water, and bug spray. Always check trail conditions before heading out.

Townsend River Walk and Arboretum

This easy, shaded trail follows the Little River and offers plenty of spots to pause and enjoy the scenery, but what really makes it magical for kids are the little surprises tucked along the way. Children can explore a whimsical fairy garden, play pretend in the mud kitchen, and discover other creative nature-themed play areas that spark imagination.

Townsend River Walk and Arboretum

With benches for parents to relax and wide, stroller-friendly paths, the River Walk is the perfect mix of outdoor beauty and family fun. It’s a place where kids can explore safely while grown-ups soak in the peaceful sounds of the river.

Don’t miss the mud kitchen and Nature playscape

Parking Tip: There is no designated parking lot for the river walk, you will have to park in the Tuckaleechee Camp Ground United Method Church. From the parking lot, head for the Townsend Historical Trail (it goes along the Lamar Alexander Parkway) and follow it to the left until you reach the underpass (Walking Trail Tunnel that goes under the Lamar Alexander Parkway), and go through the underpass.

The Townsend Bicycle Trail

This paved, 9-mile trail runs through town and is perfect for a family bike ride or stroll. The path connects local shops, restaurants, and scenic spots, making it both enjoyable and practical.

Family Tip: Bring bikes or rent them locally. If your kids aren’t riders, walking sections of the trail is just as enjoyable.
