If you’ve ever tried planning a getaway with kids and a dog, you know it’s not always easy to find a place that truly works for everyone.
That’s exactly why these pet-friendly, family-friendly riverfront cabins near Lake Cumberland are such a gem.
Located in Jamestown, KY, Cabins on the Cumberland offers a peaceful, nature-filled escape where kids can explore, dogs are genuinely welcome, and parents can actually relax.
What makes Cabins on the Cumberland ideal for families is that it offers more than just a cozy place to sleep. Picture a retreat where families can stroll the gravel trail to fish along the Cumberland River, spend evenings competing in ping-pong tournaments at the game center, or simply gather around the campfire while enjoying deliciously sticky smores.
With Lake Cumberland roughly 20 minutes away, many guests will bring boats, kayaks, or paddleboards. Let’s dive into what to expect when you book with Cabins on the Cumberland.
Multiple cabin options are available to accommodate families of all sizes. Whether you are looking to sleep 6 or 18! Not all cabins are on the river; however, guests have riverfront access. Overlooking the Cumberland River are the Riverview Cabin and the Triplex.
All of the cabins are designed with real families in mind:
We stayed at The Paddler, an inviting 2-bedroom cabin that could sleep up to 6 guests. There was one massive bathroom with a washer/dryer inside it and tons of space to spread out. An electric fireplace provided some welcome warmth in the morning while we sipped coffee and worked on our jigsaw puzzle.
Brownie, our goldendoodle, was quick to make himself at home, with his favorite spot being on the covered porch in front of the rocking chairs, basking in the sun.

Intentionally taking time to slow down, reset, refocus, and reenergize can be difficult for someone like me, who thrives on an itinerary fuller than my suitcase. Initially, fear crept up that there weren’t enough activities or things to do in the area, but after one night, the revelation that a full schedule isn’t always needed set in.
Instead of constant entertainment schedules, I was able to savor the meaningful moments, such as morning coffee while my daughter explored outside, family meals together without feeling rushed, and treasured moments of just rocking on the front porch with my Mom while the sun sank over the horizon.
Magic happens in those small moments, and it can easily be missed if you don’t take the time to notice it.
While exploring the property at Cabins on Cumberland, don’t miss an opportunity to escape to their barrel saunas. A luxury “me-moment” that parents savor, helping to rejuvenate the soul and body. With two separate barrel saunas, guests never have to wait or wait long for one to become available.
A little friendly competition has always been a source of entertainment. Head to the community Game Center, where you can test your skills at billiards, go head-to-head at ping-pong, or throw it back with vintage arcade games that will take parents and grandparents on a walk down memory lane.
One of the key highlights of the game center was meeting other families. It was here that my daughter met one of her friends with whom she played the entire vacation. They are even going to attempt to be pen pals!
Parents will rejoice that there is a wonderful playground adjacent to the Game Center. The kids would run from one to the other and even attempted a game of Pickleball on the designated court in between spurts. The Game Center is home to a variety of outdoor games along with basketballs for the court.
A visit to Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is an easy (and surprisingly fun) add-on to your Lake Cumberland itinerary—especially with kids. Located just below Wolf Creek Dam, this hatchery is one of the largest trout-producing facilities in the country, raising rainbow, brown, and brook trout that are stocked across the region.
Families can walk the paved paths, peek into the massive raceways filled with thousands of fish, and even time it right to catch a feeding, which is always a hit with kids.
It’s educational without feeling like a “lesson,” quick to explore, and completely free, making it a great low-key outing between bigger adventures around Lake Cumberland.
A short drive from your cabin, Lake Cumberland is one of the best outdoor destinations in the state.
It’s an easy win for families—kids absolutely love it.
Tip: While driving around the lake, don’t miss the Wolf Creek Dam Overlook. It offers an Insta-worthy view!
A hidden gem that makes a phenomenal picnic spot is the Kendell Recreation Park. Located right across from the Wolf Creek Hatchery, the park offers plenty of green space, riverfront access, and front row views of the Wolf Creek Dam and Power Plant.
With shady picnic areas overlooking the Cumberland River, many families gather here to try their hand at trout fishing. Big Daddy’s Snack Shack is located inside the park, offering concession favorites like cheeseburgers, soft drinks, and ice cream. They also sell bait and fishing gear.
Only four minutes from Cabins on the Cumberland is the Natural Bridge. I will give you all the details because your Google Maps will not prepare you for this one. Signage is nonexistent, so once your map has told you that you are there, look for a driveway that appears to go down into the gorge.
The driveaway is a mix of loose gravel, some pavement, and plenty of potholes. Highly suggest 4WD if visiting in winter. Once at the bottom, there is an opening where folks park. You will see a monument dedicated to the natural bridge.
You can see the bridge with a quick walk to the edge of the creek bed, but to go down into the creek bed, you will need to use the rope or descend down the slope slowly on your bottom. Remember, you will need to use the rope to get back up or brute arm strength.
Once in the creek bed, you can cross under the bridge for beautiful views of the Cumberland River. During our visit, we encountered 100’s of butterflies! It felt like a scene out of Encanto!
Head into Jamestown for a quick outing when you want a change of pace.
