From Columbus, Ohio, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive to Huntington via US-23 South and I-64 East, offering a mix of rural charm and small-town scenery. Lexington, Kentucky, travelers can reach Huntington in just under 2 hours by taking I-64 East, making it a quick and easy escape into the mountains. If you’re coming from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, expect a 4-hour drive through rolling hills and along river valleys via I-79 South and US-119.
Even Indianapolis, Indiana, is within weekend-trip range—roughly 4.5 hours away via I-70 East and US-35. With such easy access from so many cities, Huntington is a convenient launching point for a memorable and affordable family adventure in West Virginia.

Just a short drive from Huntington (20 minutes), Beech Fork State Park is a peaceful retreat in southwestern West Virginia’s rolling hills. Travel Tip: We fell in love with the cabins here and immediately wished we were here for more than one night. Depending on your availability and itinerary, I would try to squeeze in an extra evening here if possible.

Start the day early with a drive to Clay, WV, for a truly unique experience with Rail Explorers USA. Families pedal specially designed rail bikes along the old Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad, traveling 12 miles round-trip through forested paths, over bridges, and past stunning waterfalls.
This experience is fun, safe, and accessible for all ages—plus, it’s a great way to enjoy the fresh mountain air. Don’t forget to bring snacks for the turnaround point!

After all that exploring, it was off to indulge in some of the best sushi in Charleston, WV. Kita Modern Japanese offers a fresh and welcoming take on Japanese cuisine that’s both stylish and surprisingly kid-friendly. While the sleek, modern design gives it a trendy feel, the warm atmosphere and attentive staff make families feel right at home.
The menu features beautifully crafted sushi rolls, flavorful noodle bowls, and shareable small plates, with options that even picky eaters will enjoy—think crispy tempura, steamed rice, and mild teriyaki dishes. When I say the dishes are beautifully crafted, they are some of the prettiest japanese dishes I have ever seen!
Travel Note: I will seek this place out anytime I am in/near Charleston. It is one of the top sushi restaurants I have encountered in my travels.
Next, stretch your legs with a walk along the Sunrise Carriage Trail. This gentle, 1.4-mile out-and-back trail winds through the forest right beside downtown. Lined with old stone walls and historical markers, the trail is both peaceful and scenic, offering great city views and even better photo ops.

Wrap up your day with some classic American fun at a Charleston Dirty Birds baseball game. This minor league stadium offers big-league excitement, with on-site food options and a lively atmosphere. Before heading home, visit Capitol Market, a vibrant year-round indoor/outdoor market in a beautifully renovated train station. Whether picking up a bouquet of fresh flowers, grabbing local snacks, or browsing the specialty shops, this spot perfectly blends local flavor and charm.
There are lots of great spots to grab a bite to eat as well, such as Bogeys, Sushi Garden, and more. The market is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
