Planning a Florida Keys road trip can be the perfect adventure for families looking to blend tropical vibes with a laid-back, scenic drive. From the moment you hit the Overseas Highway—often called one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S.—you’re in for a journey filled with turquoise waters, quirky roadside stops, and opportunities for unforgettable memories.

Just keep in mind that the drive can be long if you’re starting from mainland Florida, so if your crew isn’t into extended car time, you may want to plan extra stops or consider flying in. But for families who love a mix of adventure, nature, and island charm, a Key West road trip might just be the perfect getaway.

Planning Tip: The Keys are not known for their beaches, which are often small and rocky. Instead, consider more water sports such as snorkeling, kayaking, jet skiing, boating, and scuba diving.

Where to Fly Into for a Florida Keys Road Trip

Visitors looking to drive the entire length of the Florida Keys have three major airport options., Miami (MIA), Ft. Lauderdale (FLL), or Key West (EYW).

Budget Tip: I would recommend pricing out options for all three airports. We found flying in/out of Fort Lauderdale cheaper, and it only added an extra 30 minutes of driving time to our road trip.

Pick the Perfect Rental Car

Choosing the perfect rental car for your road trip can make a big difference in your overall experience. Think about your route, how much space you’ll need, and what kind of driving you’ll be doing. If you’re cruising down scenic highways like the Overseas Highway to Key West, a convertible or SUV with big windows can enhance the views and keep everyone comfortable.

For longer trips or bigger families, a roomy SUV or minivan with good fuel efficiency and plenty of storage space for luggage, snacks, and road trip essentials is a smart pick. Don’t forget to check for features like Bluetooth, USB ports, and a navigation system to make the ride smoother and more fun.

During our recent trip, we found that Discover Cars offered a great variety of rentals at a good value in Fort Lauderdale.

Ultimately, the right rental car should balance comfort, budget, and practicality so you can focus on the fun and not the logistics.

Lodging During Your Florida Keys Road Trip

Road tripping down the Florida Keys is more than just a drive—it’s an experience, and breaking up the journey with a couple of overnight stops makes it even better. With a family in tow, I recommend picking two or three different spots to stay at on your way down.

A few recommendations would be overnighting in Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and Key West.

Airbnb Rental in Key Largo

On our trip, we stayed in Tavernier and Cudjoe Key. Looking back, I think we would’ve enjoyed basing ourselves in Islamorada or Marathon instead—they’re a bit more central, with easier access to family-friendly activities. Key Largo would’ve made for a perfect day trip from either spot.

We stayed at Pelican Lodge in Tavernier, which offers a tiny beach, a lovely swimming pool, tennis courts, and a play area. Our condo was a standard 2BR/BA, but the balcony left much to be desired. Think of it as less of a balcony and more of a standing-room-only outdoor shelf.

In Cudjoe Key, we stayed at Venture Out Resort Vacation Rentals. The resort caters more to a relaxed, mature crowd—we definitely stood out with our little ones’ pool energy! While the resort is lovely and peaceful, families with young kids might find other options in the area more accommodating to their needs.

Have a few overnights along your journey down the Overseas Highway

Staying overnight in these spots lets you slow down, explore hidden gems, and soak in the island vibes before reaching your final destination in Key West. It’s the perfect way to turn the drive into part of the adventure.

Day 1: Miami to Key Largo/ Tavernier

Drive Time: ~1.5 hours

Kick off your road trip with an easy drive from Miami to Key Largo, the gateway to the Florida Keys.

Must-Do Activities:

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – Take a glass-bottom boat tour or go snorkeling to see colorful marine life or the Christ of the Abyss. There is a mock Spanish shipwreck for guests to snorkel only feet from the beach.
Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center—This is a free stop where kids can see rescued birds up close. They ask for a $10 donation.

Key Largo Fisheries – Freshly caught local specialties like stone crabs, lobster, and mahi-mahi in a relaxed, marina-front setting.

Snappers– Waterfront dining, with plenty of seafood options.

Drive Time: ~30 minutes

History of Diving Museum – A fascinating stop where kids and adults can learn about the history of underwater exploration, featuring unique diving artifacts and interactive exhibits.
Rain Barrel Village: A classic roadside attraction featuring Betsy the Lobster, who is 30 feet high! Shop local artisans, grab some Boba from Mana-tea, and take in the local art.

Day 3: Islamorada/ Marathon

Drive Time: ~45 minutes

Midway through your trip, Marathon is the perfect place to relax and explore marine life.

Castaway Waterfront Restaurant and Sushi Bar– An affordable seafood stop, with local manatees often swimming by. Try the Coconut Key Lime Pie for a tasty treat!
Island Fish Company – Waterfront dining with a relaxed atmosphere.
Sweet Savannah’s – A must-visit for delicious homemade ice cream, cupcakes and Key Lime Pie.
Habanos– Incredible Cuban meals with waterfront views. The best whole fish we had in the Keys was here!

Day 4: Marathon & The Lower Keys

Drive Time: ~40 minutes

Before reaching Key West, take a detour to the quieter Lower Keys. Many guests will even opt to stay on the lower keys and day trip to Key West.

Bahia Honda State Park

Must-Do Activities:

Bahia Honda State Park – A stunning beach with shallow waters perfect for little swimmers. Don’t miss strolling to the top of the bridge and learning the history of the iconic railroad that made its way down the Keys.
National Key Deer Refuge – Spot the adorable and tiny endangered Key deer.
Blue Hole – A unique freshwater pond with alligators, turtles, and birds.
Veterans Memorial Beach – A great beach to bring the kids, especially during low tide. It is off the main highway before you venture over the famous 7 Mile Bridge.

No Name Pub – A quirky, historic spot known for its pizza and fun atmosphere.
Square Grouper– An easy-going, seafood spot with plenty of American flair.

Travel Time: ~40-minute seaplane ride or ~2.5-hour ferry ride each way

For an unforgettable adventure, take a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, one of the most remote and beautiful destinations in the U.S. Located 70 miles west of Key West, this stunning park is accessible only by boat or seaplane.

Pro Tip: There are only two ways to reach Dry Tortugas National Park: by seaplane or ferry. The ferry runs just once a day and takes about 2.5 hours each way, so be sure to plan ahead. Both options tend to sell out months in advance.
