The UnMuseum: The Perfect Cincinnati Spot To Take The Kids This Weekend

Spread the love

We love to be a tourist in our own city. It has lead to the discovery of many hidden gems and amazing experiences that have been right under our noses! We stumbled across the UnMuseum by word of mouth and what a unique and fun find this has been. It is the perfect Cincinnati spot to take the kids this weekend.

Know Before You Go

The UnMuseum is located on the 6th inside the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Museum (CAC).  The CAC is conveniently located downtown right across from Nada.  The official arts ambassador, Metrobot,  will greet you as you arrive! Admission to the museum and its galleries are free to the public. Parking was relatively easy as there are multiple parking garages located near the museum. Street parking is available, but that requires speed, agility and the luck of the Irish.  The museum does have unique hours so be sure to check them out before you go on their website.

Upon entering the CAC you will be welcomed by the receptionist who will be happy to help guide you to the UnMuseum or any other gallery that you may be looking for. A cafe is located inside the lobby which is the ideal spot for snacks because food and drink are not allowed in the galleries.  There are water fountains located throughout the building. After filling hungry tummies,  a huge elevator will zip you and your entourage up to the UnMuseum or you can opt to the take the stairs.

The UnMuseum

The entire six floor is dedicated to interactive exhibits that encourage children and their parents to engage with a variety of innovative art.  Artists are commissioned to create special exhibits and works of art aimed directly at young children.  The minute your little ones step foot of the elevator you are in a family-friendly environment where they can touch and explore everything around them.  The UnMuseum is not huge but offers plenty of exhibits and art-making opportunities.

The Exhibits

The exhibits found in the UnMuseum are unlike any you will find elsewhere in the city. This is because they give children a different perspective on art and it sparks their curiosity. Whether it is starring in an infinitely of lights, hopping aboard a crazy camper or making music in a bizarre manner there is something for everyone to explore.  You may even make a few new friends during your visit.

Create Your Own Art

As a parent to a young toddler art can often be a messy activity. I immediately fell in love with their play and create space which gave my daughter a creative outlet without the mess. Everyday items are scattered on shelves and bins let little ones discover, assemble and create their own inventions. She loved pulling out each bin and left no shelf unturned. She made a robot, a snowman, and a house before we moved on. There are little pieces and parts scattered in throughout so be on the lookout if you have a child who is still sticking things in their mouth. Be courteous and clean up your child’s mess if they are unable to do so because it makes it more enjoyable for the next little guest.

Art Making Space

In addition to their Please Play Area, the UnMuseum has a huge art-making space as well. Open the entire time the museum is open guests can go and make their own work of art.  Everything you need is available at your fingertips to create a glowing masterpiece. Parents love not having to worry about scheduled art times or extra fees.

Family Programs

Family Art Play

If you are looking for a fun scheduled activity for your little one Family Art Play is a great addition. Every Thursday at 10:30 am this program incorporates storytelling, performance, and hands-on artmaking activities. The class is followed by some kid-friendly yoga in the UnMuseum but keep in mind that it is aimed at children 2-5. The cost is free for members and $5.00 for non-members.

A visit to the UnMuseum is a great indoor activity for those rainy, snowy days because it is educational and doesn’t cost a dime.  Check out our Cincinnati family favorites for more fun things to explore in our great city.
