What Should I Pack For Exploring Charleston Falls Preserve?

When heading to Charleston Falls Preserve, pack comfortable hiking shoes with good traction, especially if you plan to explore the trails near the waterfall or creek. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray — the shaded areas can attract mosquitoes in warmer months. A small hiking backpack is perfect for carrying snacks, a map (or snap a photo of one with your camera), and your camera or phone for snapping photos of the scenic falls and wildflowers. Don’t forget a light jacket or rain poncho if the forecast looks uncertain, as the weather can change quickly.

Discover the “Miniature Niagara”

At the heart of Charleston Falls Preserve lies its most captivating feature—a 37-foot waterfall often referred to as a “Miniature Niagara.” Fed by underground springs, the stream cascades over rock strata similar to those found at Niagara Falls. The stream then continues onward toward the Great Miami River.

As with most waterfalls in Ohio, the best times to visit are in April, May, and October or after days of heavy rain. Sadly, most of these waterfalls dry out or are reduced to a trickle in the summer months.

A notable feature is the small limestone cave near the falls, which is especially popular with children eager to explore its shallow depths.
