As the golden hour cast a warm glow over Cincinnati, I found myself perched atop the rooftop bar at The Vick, a custom-made gin and tonic in hand, gazing out over my alma mater. The sun’s final rays bathed the campus in a nostalgic hue, stirring memories of late-night study sessions, spirited campus events, and the unbreakable bonds formed during those formative years. My years at the University of Cincinnati have been transformative, helping mold me into the person I am today.
The city’s gentle hum below contrasted beautifully with the tranquility we felt up here, high above the hustle. As I took a sip, I reflected on how Cincinnati, with its hidden pockets of charm, had always been a place of discovery for me. Today, it was a place of rediscovery —through a staycation exploring its newest gems: Hotel Celare and the rooftop bar at The Vick.
From the moment we stepped into Hotel Celare, we felt welcomed. The ambiance combined contemporary elegance with subtle nods to Cincinnati’s industrial roots—exposed brick, vintage lighting, and local artwork. Our room was a sanctuary of comfort, with plush bedding, sweeping campus views, and thoughtful touches that didn’t get overlooked. Did I mention they had Cincinnati-themed wallpaper in the bathroom?!
Our room offered a sweeping view of the University of Cincinnati’s campus, which I would personally request for any visit. It is important to note that the hotel is near a few hospitals, so ambulance sirens are a common occurrence. While the hotel is tranquil, if you are a light sleeper, you will want to consider packing a sound machine or earplugs to muffle the sounds of the city.
Tip: Every room comes equipped with a Nespresso machine, allowing you to start your day with a freshly brewed coffee without leaving the comfort of your room.
Address: 310 Straight Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 45219
Don’t forget to snag your UC apparel if you are coming for a sporting event!
As evening approached, we made our way to The Vick, their new rooftop bar perched atop the Hotel Celare. The atmosphere buzzed with energy—laughter, clinking glasses, and stunning views.
The Vick is a vibrant bar bursting with color and energy, where bold pops of neon meet lush greenery and chic design. With a playful hint of ’80s nostalgia woven into its modern aesthetic, it’s the kind of space that feels both retro-cool and effortlessly sophisticated.
Outdoor and indoor seating are available; however, the garage door style windows are often open, allowing the breeze to infiltrate the area.
A seasonal menu offers with new, unique cocktails, but one staple is the “Pear” of Stiletto Will Do. A pear-inspired cocktail for two, served in a neon pink stiletto, which will be the envy of fellow patrons. We ordered their DIY gin and tonic, which comes with infused botanicals for you to add.
The beef carpaccio at The Vick rooftop bar was hands-down the best I’ve ever had—paper-thin slices of melt-in-your-mouth beef paired with shaved parmesan, and just the right touch of citrus. To complement the beef carpaccio, we ordered a charcuterie board to nibble on while watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Local Tip: Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends or on dates where there is a sporting event on UC’s campus.
We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the Iris Café inside the hotel —locally roasted coffee paired with Belgian waffles—before heading out to explore. It felt like a cozy home base, a perfect blend of relaxation and local flavor.
As night falls, the atmosphere shifts into a laid-back spot for dining and cocktails. The menu showcases inventive small plates—like the Short Rib Baguette and the Topaz Salad with tahini dressing—paired with a lineup of creative drinks, including the Beauty + The Bearcat and the Spiced Orange Mocha Espresso Martin.
Just steps from the hotel, you’ll find Cap City Fine Diner and Bar, a fantastic spot for dining. Offering a modern twist on the classic American diner experience. With its upscale yet approachable vibe, the restaurant is known for comfort food favorites elevated with chef-driven flair—from hearty meatloaf and crispy fried chicken to indulgent milkshakes and seasonal specialties.
The lively atmosphere, retro-inspired décor, and warm hospitality make it a go-to spot for both casual meals and celebratory nights out.
Local Tip: Try the Blue Cheese Chips for a unique appetizer.
The Hotel offers valet parking at $40 per day, or you can opt to park in the nearby garage for a daily rate. There is limited street parking, but if college or is in session, they are hard to come by.
Summer months will often have more flexibility than in the fall and winter months. However, I recommend booking sooner than later when wanting to stay overnight after a UC Game or on a weekend in the fall/winter.
Yes! The Hotel Celare is a pet-friendly hotel and will roll out the red carpet for your four-legged companion.
