Located in Johnson County, just south of Indianapolis, Franklin is the kind of small town that packs a surprising amount into its walkable downtown. You’ll find historic buildings, local shops, colorful art alleys, antique stores, family-friendly restaurants, sweet treats, and plenty of things to keep everyone entertained.

And while Franklin is a great place to explore at a leisurely pace, there are enough things to do nearby that you can easily turn a visit into a full weekend getaway.

This Franklin, Indiana weekend itinerary combines the best of downtown Franklin with a Saturday evening and Sunday in nearby Greenwood.

Friday: Arrive in Franklin + Dinner, Ice Cream & Mini Bowling

Check Into Your Franklin Lodging

Start your weekend by checking in and getting settled.

I recommend renting an Airbnb downtown as it is a great spot for exploring Franklin on foot. Much of the downtown shopping, restaurants, attractions, and entertainment are clustered around Jefferson Street and the courthouse square.

We stayed at the most darling three-bedroom Airbnb that had the most magnificent coffee bar, a soaking tub, and was only steps from downtown.

For this trip, check-in begins at 4 p.m.

Pro tip: Staying downtown means you can park the car and walk to quite a few of your Friday and Saturday activities.

After you have gotten settled in, you can start exploring downtown Franklin or head to dinner!

Dinner at The Foundry Gastropub

Address: 90 E. Jefferson St., Franklin

Kick your trip off with a phenomenal dinner at The Foundry Gastropub. It’s a newer addition to downtown Franklin with elevated American food and a more polished atmosphere. Sip on craft cocktails, splurge on a savory steak, or nosh your way through their incredible appetizer menu.

Tip: I recommend making a reservation, as this popular spot fills up quickly, especially on weekends.

Grab Ice Cream at Millie’s

No family weekend getaway is complete without dessert, so make your way to Millie’s Ice Cream Co.

If you see pancake poppers on the menu, order them.

You’re welcome.

Pair them with ice cream for an especially fun treat before heading to your next activity.

Go Mini Bowling at 10 Pins

Finish your first night with a round of mini bowling at 10 Pins.

This isn’t your traditional bowling alley. It’s a smaller, more casual version of bowling that’s perfect for families and groups who want something fun without committing to a full night at a bowling alley.

We had an 8 p.m. reservation, and the reservation lasts for one hour.

A few things to know:

• No special bowling shoes are required.
• Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed.
• Food and drinks are available on-site.
• Reservations are a good idea, especially on busy weekends.

It’s a surprisingly fun way to end your first night in Franklin.

Saturday: History, Shopping, Art & Downtown Franklin

Saturday is your big Franklin exploration day.

I’d recommend starting with breakfast before spending most of the day walking around downtown.

Start With Breakfast

You have a few good options depending on what you’re craving.

Pana Donuts

If you’re looking for a seriously good donut, make the short drive to Pana Donuts.

It’s not right in the heart of downtown, but if you’re a donut person, it’s worth the detour.

Coffeehouse Five

41 W. Monroe St., Franklin

Coffee lovers should put Coffeehouse Five on their list.

It’s walkable from downtown and known for coffee and breakfast sandwiches made with in-house ingredients.

Step Back in Time at the Johnson County Museum of History

135 N. Main St., Franklin

Before diving into the shops and restaurants, spend some time learning about the community at the Johnson County Museum of History.

Housed in the former Masonic Temple, the museum has preserved Johnson County history for decades. Its exhibits take visitors through the area’s history, from its geological beginnings and pioneer days to the 1950s.

The museum is especially worth adding to a family itinerary because admission is free. They have a fun pioneer exhibit where kids can dress up and experience what life was like. My daughter spent a whole hour here and tried to beg us to come back again!

The museum is located just one block north of the Johnson County Courthouse, making it incredibly easy to combine with the rest of your downtown adventures.

Good to know: If you’re planning a Sunday or Monday visit to Franklin, the museum won’t be open, so be sure to put it on your Saturday schedule.

Explore Downtown Franklin

Now it’s time to explore one of Franklin’s biggest draws: its downtown.

Downtown Franklin has been recognized as Indiana’s Best Main Street and is packed with local businesses, historic architecture, antique shops, restaurants, boutiques, and art.

And this is where I recommend slowing down.

Don’t try to rush through everything. Wander Jefferson Street, pop into stores that catch your eye, explore the alleys, and let yourself discover something unexpected.

Go Antiquing

Franklin is a fantastic destination for antique lovers.

Many of the antique and vintage shops are concentrated around Jefferson Street, making it easy to browse several without constantly getting back in the car.

Even if you’re not a serious picker, they’re fun to explore.

Stop at Toodleydoo Toys

Traveling with kids?

Make sure you stop at Toodleydoo Toys, a locally owned toy store that’s fun for both kids and adults.

There’s also a free outdoor play area, and you can grab cornhole bags and game pieces inside the store to use outside.

It’s the perfect place to let kids burn off a little energy while you browse.

Make Your Own Candle at Woven Co.

Looking for a hands-on activity?

It’s a fun souvenir because, unlike a typical gift-shop souvenir, you made it yourself.

Check Out the Local Charm Bars

Franklin has several creative businesses where you can make something customized to take home.

Depending on your interests, check out:

Don’t just stick to the storefronts.

Franklin’s Arts District includes colorful murals, installations, sculptures, and some seriously Instagram-worthy alleyways.

Some of the standout spots include Kuji Alley, with its Japan-inspired artwork and floating lanterns, Artcraft Alley, and Veterans Alley.

If you’re visiting with kids, turn it into a scavenger hunt and see how many pieces of public art you can find.

Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour

Want to learn more about what you’re seeing?

Franklin offers free, map-guided self-guided walking tours through a mobile website. There are five different tour themes, so you can choose the one that sounds most interesting to you.

It’s a great way to add some history to your downtown stroll without having to commit to a formal tour.

Stop at the Festival Country Indiana Visitor Center

While you’re downtown, stop by the Festival Country Indiana Visitor Center. It’s more than just a place to grab brochures. The visitor center has free restrooms, merchandise, a photo booth, a giant apple, a slide, and other fun photo opportunities.

By now, you’ve probably worked up an appetite.

Blue Cactus Tacos & Tequila Bar

For something fun and casual, grab lunch at Blue Cactus. With an extensive menu of Mexican favorites and tacos, this will be an instant favorite. Don’t forget a margarita flight and the queso!

The Willard

A local favorite, the Willard has been a Franklin staple for decades! Enjoy classics like chicken wings, delicious pizzas, and sandwiches.

Don’t Skip Hoosier Cupboard Candy, Snacks & Ice Cream

After lunch, head over to Hoosier Cupboard Candy, Snacks & Ice Cream.

This old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop is housed in the historic Franklin Depot and is a must-visit! If you think choosing from their 30+ ice cream flavors is hard, wait until you see over 1,000 candy options!

Tip: Take your ice cream to enjoy at the picnic tables near the caboose across the train tracks!

Saturday Evening: Dinner & Free Concert

After spending most of the day in Franklin, hop in the car and head to nearby Greenwood for your Saturday evening.

Wine enthusiasts, don’t sleep on dinner at Vino Villa! With an excellent selection of wines from around the world, the dishes here are thoughtfully crafted to complement what’s in your glass.

Whether you’re stopping in for a special dinner or just want to explore great wine-and-food pairings, add this to your list!

If the weather is nice, request a patio table and ask about the bocce ball equipment. You can play on the sand courts while enjoying dinner.

Catch a Free Concert

Festival Country is known for its live music and concert series. With fun festivals, concerts in the park, and live music at local establishments, it is hard to find a weekend when nothing is going on! Visit their website for a list of local music happening throughout the county.

Tip: Check the current event schedule before your trip since concert dates and performers can change.

Sunday: Brunch & a Summer Afternoon at Freedom Springs

Before heading home, you’ve got one more day to enjoy the area.

Brunch at Antilogy

Start Sunday with brunch at Antilogy.

It’s a great way to ease into your final day before heading to the pool.

Spend the Afternoon at Freedom Springs Aquatics Park

850 W. Stop 18 Road, Greenwood

If you’re visiting during the summer, finish your weekend with an afternoon at Freedom Springs Aquatics Park. Zip down water slides, relax in the lazy river, or take a dive off the high dive! It is a perfect summer activity with the kids in tow.

Tip: Make sure you bring your ID with you! They require it in order to purchase a day pass.

You can bring water in a cooler, but outside food and beverages aren’t allowed. The park does have concessions, including pizza and subs, so you don’t have to leave when everyone inevitably gets hungry.

Small-town businesses can have limited or varying hours, particularly on Sundays and Mondays. Check individual businesses before your trip.

Make reservations when you can

If there’s a restaurant or activity you really want to experience, make a reservation ahead of time. This is especially helpful for activities like mini bowling and creative workshops.

Don’t over-schedule yourself

This is one of those destinations where wandering is part of the fun.

Leave some room in your itinerary to walk into the random antique store you weren’t expecting to visit, discover a mural, grab ice cream, or spend longer at a shop than you planned.

Is Franklin, Indiana Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

Franklin is an easy weekend getaway with a little bit of everything: history, shopping, food, art, family-friendly activities, and plenty of small-town charm.

What surprised me most was just how much there is to do within a relatively compact downtown. You can park your car, grab a coffee, explore a museum, go shopping, hunt for public art, grab lunch, eat ice cream, and finish the day with mini bowling—all without driving all over the place.

Then add nearby Greenwood to the itinerary, and you’ve got enough activities for a full weekend without feeling like you’re constantly rushing from one attraction to the next.
