Consider not only the cost of the cruise itself but also additional expenses such as flights, shore excursions, and onboard activities. Set a realistic budget and look for cruises that fit within your financial parameters.

Cruise Tip: Budget for gratuity. A daily gratuity per day per person is added to your stateroom bill at the end of the cruise. This can range from $14-$20 a day. Many lines now allow you to pay it upfront. You can also change your daily gratuity amount at the customer desk onboard.

Duration

How long do you want your cruise to be? From short weekend getaways to extended voyages, there is a cruise length for every preference. Consider your available time off, desired number of destinations, and personal comfort level when choosing the duration of your cruise.

Cabin Selection

The type of cabin you choose can greatly impact your cruise experience. Cruise Tip: When booking an excursion through the cruise line, many of the ships guarantee that they will wait for your group if the tour you book through the cruise line gets you back to the ship after departure time.

However, if you prefer a more independent adventure, you can also explore the ports on your own. Just make sure to plan your itinerary, research transportation options, and be aware of the ship’s departure time.

When going ashore, it’s essential to carry necessary items such as a map, local currency, and identification. Additionally, be aware of any cultural norms or customs at each destination to ensure you show respect and avoid any misunderstandings.

Remember to allocate enough time for your excursions, allowing for unexpected delays or detours. It’s better to have extra time to explore a place than to feel rushed and miss out on seeing something incredible.

Packing For Your Cruise: Must-Haves and Essentials

This will allow for any travel complications such as canceled flights, delays, and construction. Getting a hotel near the port will ease timing anxieties, and many port hotels offer a shuttle to the port. If a hotel shuttle is unavailable, there are often affordable Ubers that will take you to the port.

Where Do I Park When Taking A Cruise

• Park at the cruise terminal: Most cruise terminals have parking lots and garages for cruise guests. Parking is usually first-come, first-served. You can pay for parking when you arrive, or you can:
  • Pre-pay: Pre-paying for parking can save you money and stress. You can often get a reserved spot or section, and it’s usually cheaper than paying when you arrive. 
  • Use a third-party parking lot: There are often several third-party parking lots near the terminal. These lots are usually cheaper than the terminal, and you may be able to take a shuttle to the terminal. 
• Leave your car at the luggage drop-off: Some cruise terminals allow you to leave your car at the luggage drop-off zone and board the ship. The parking charge is added to your onboard account, which you settle before disembarking. 
• Use a hotel with stay and cruise rates: Some hotels offer stay and cruise rates, which may include parking. 

Tips For a Smooth Embarkation Process

There will be a designated area where you will drop your luggage off with the porters (except for your carry-on).

Make sure to have all the necessary documents, such as your passport or identification, boarding pass, and any required visas, readily available. Keep them in a secure and easily accessible place, such as a document organizer or small bag.

Pack a carry-on bag

Pack a small carry-on bag with essentials you will need on the first day of the cruise, such as your swimsuit, toiletries, medications, and a change of clothes. This will ensure you have everything you need while your main luggage is delivered to your cabin.

Cruise Tip: Many cruise lines will allow each passenger to bring aboard a bottle or two of wine or a pack of beer. Check with your cruise line to see their policy.
