Planning a successful group retreat can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to finding the perfect location in Ohio. Hocking Hills offers a serene and picturesque backdrop for your group retreat, perfect for fostering teamwork and relaxation.

With its stunning natural beauty, including lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and unique rock formations, Hocking Hills provides the ideal setting for outdoor bonding activities and team-building exercises.

Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquility, Hocking Hills offers diverse activities to cater to every individual’s preferences, making it a perfect choice for your next group retreat.

Choosing The Best Accommodation For Your Group

Selecting the right accommodation is crucial to ensuring a successful group retreat in Hocking Hills. When choosing where to stay, consider group the primary purpose of the group retreat, size, budget, and desired amenities.

Options range from luxurious cabins nestled in the heart of nature to charming lodges with ample space for group activities. Make sure to book well in advance to secure your preferred accommodation and guarantee a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all attendees.

Things to Consider:

  • The amount of bathrooms in the space you are considering. While more intimate groups such as friends or families are more apt to share bathrooms, guests not as familiar with each other may find it off-putting to share with one or more people.
  • Have multiple common areas, especially if visiting during the winter months. This will give guests places to read, relax, and socialize if another common space is occupied.
  • Know the bed situation and if guests must sleep on pull-out sofas.
  • Look for fun amenities like a pool table, hot tub, sauna, or gaming system.

We stayed at Raven’s Retreat: The Unique Art Lodge during our most recent Mom’s retreat. Situated on 58 acres of nature preserve, this spot offers a serene and intimate setting for your group getaway.

Everywhere you look, you will find something new and eye-catching. With open spaces, large decks, and even a yoga platform in the woods, there are plenty of opportunities to break off in small groups or offer different activities.

  • Ornament Making with the Broken Birch. The Broken Birch has an assortment of individual crafts that groups can participate in, including creating custom ornaments. It was the perfect way to commemorate our group trip.

Hiking Hocking Hills With A Group

Embarking on an outdoor adventure to see the beauty of Hocking Hills is a great group activity. However, now is not the time for an epic climb, as you must account for various levels of hikers. Be flexible with your expectations and have some backup plans if you need to change your route to suit the group’s ability level.

The Best Hikes In Hocking Hills For A Group

Ash Cave

Our absolute favorite Hocking Hills Hiking Trail is the Ash Cave. Ash Cave tends to be one of the park’s most popular trails but for a good reason. Ash Cave is the most impressive recess cave in the state.

The cave got its name from the bushels of ashes found within. A small waterfall is created from the tributary of the East Fork of Queer Creek, cascading over the rim into a small pool below. It is known to freeze during the winter months, creating a spectacular sight.

Ash Cave Hiking Trail
Ash Cave in Hocking Hills, Ohio

There is a good-sized parking lot across the street from the trailhead. Restrooms and picnic tables are available. The trail leading to the cave is paved, making this hike ideal for groups. Parents could even bring a stroller if traveling with small children.

Pets are also welcome along the route, so long as they are leashed.

The Ash Cave Gorge Trail is handicap accessible and is 1/4 mile long. It takes visitors directly to the cave. Guests can then return the way they came or venture on to the Ash Cave Rim Trail.

The Ash Cave Rim Trail is 1/2 mile long and includes some hazardous cliffs, but it is relatively easy.

Old Man’s Cave

The most popular hike in Hocking Hills is to Old Man’s Cave. Many hikers begin their Hocking Hills quest here because it is home to the Hocking Hills Visitor Center and a trailhead to various trails, including the Grandma Gatewood Trail. This trail connects three popular areas of the park; Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave.

Old Man's Cave
Old Man’s Cave

Quick Tips For Old Man’s Cave

  • I recommend getting a map from the Visitors Center or downloading one before hiking these trails. You can even take a photo of the map on your phone to reference later if you lose service. The trails are fairly well labeled, but better safe than sorry.
  • Arrive early, as crowds tend to build up throughout the day.
  • Many of the trails in the area will connect with the Old Man’s Cave Trail.
  • Wear proper footwear.
  • During the winter months, ice makes these trails challenging to hike. Bridges freeze over, icy forms on the stairwells, and the insides of caverns become ice skating rinks.
  • Old Man’s Cave Trail is a 0.6-mile trail that can sometimes be very crowded. It leads to the cave through the gorge and along Old Man’s Creek.
  • The Grandma Gatewood Trail is six miles long. A return hike to your car will make it a total of 12 miles. The Grandma Gatewood Trail has been designated part of the Buckeye Trail.
  • Hemlock Bridge and Whispering Cave Trail is a 1.9-mile out-and-back trail located off of the Old Man Cave Trail. Whispering Falls is located along this trail.
  • The Upper and Lower Falls is a 1.2-mile out-and-back trail that will take hikers to both falls, including a visit to Old Man’s Cave.
  • Broken Rock Falls is a one-mile loop that offers beautiful scenery and plenty of rock formations. The trail can be accessed off the Old Man’s Trail, which is a great addition.
  • These trails are pet-friendly and provide a parking area, picnic shelters, and restrooms.

Conkles Hollow Gorge Trail

Another great group-friendly trail is the Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve Gorge Trail. This majestic gorge is full of grottos, waterfalls, and cliffs. The Gorge Trail is a paved, handicap-accessible trail that takes guests through the heart of the gorge.

Conkle's Hollow Nature Preserve
Conkle’s Hollow Nature Preserve

Stop in to explore the grotto, enjoy a quiet moment by the stream, and take in the rocky formations. Rumor has it that there is a large sum of hidden money in the gorge from a small band of Native Americans who robbed settlers near the Ohio River.

Conkles Hollow Nature Preserve offers an ample parking lot and restrooms. However, this trail is NOT pet-friendly.

Conkles Hollow Gorge Trail
Conkles Hollow Gorge Trail

The Conkles Hollow Gorge Trail is roughly a mile long, out and back trail. Highlights along the trails include Slump Rock and The Grotto, along with two beautiful waterfalls.

Conkles Hollow Rim TrailThis is a more adventurous trail; therefore, use extreme caution as it circles the tops of the gorge’s cliffs. While the trail rewards hikers with outstanding views, this 2.5-mile hike is quite strenuous.

Cedar Falls

A beautiful waterfall hike is to Cedar Falls. The trail is relatively easy, which increases its popularity. Narrow passageways can make this out and back trail a little challenging, especially during peak season, as more hikers try to navigate these problematic areas.

Cedar Falls in Hocking Hills
Cedar Falls

The waterfalls are beautiful, and the flow varies depending on recent rainfall. During winter months, the trail can get icy, so use caution. Cedar Falls is a pet-friendly trail, so long as dogs are on a leash.

The Cedar Falls Trails is a half-mile relatively easy trail, except for climbing some rocks and a few narrow passageways. Near the parking lot, there are restrooms and picnic areas.

The Cedar Falls Trail also connects to the Buckeye Trail/ Grandma Gatewood Trail, leading to Ash Cave, and the Grandma Gatewood Trail, leading to Old Man’s Cave.

Group Dining Options in Hocking Hills

Meal assignments are a popular way to handle meals during close-knit group retreats, with two or three individuals pairing up to create each meal. However, there are many great dining options throughout Hocking Hills for groups to enjoy and take a break from cooking!

Planning Tip: When having your group bring meals, divide and conquer. Assign 2-3 people per meal. A few of our favorite group meals are charcuterie boards with wine tasting, tacos, and margaritas!

Charcuterie boards are a great meal option for a group

Tip: It is always helpful to call ahead to make reservations or call ahead seating for large groups.

  • Millstone Smoked BBQ– A great BBQ joint in the heart of Logan serving traditional southern smoked BBQ meats.
  • LaCascada– One of the best places to grab margaritas, queso, and Mexican favorites.
  • Jimbo’s Burgers & Beer- A casual sports bar with a big patio space.
  • 58 West– A restaurant, winery, and brewery all wrapped into one!

If all else fails, there are plenty of pizza parlors throughout Hocking Hills, and even some that deliver!

Old Pine Treehouse Review at The Mohicans

Sleep among the treetops during a magical stay in the rustic Old Pine Treehouse at the Mohicans. If staying overnight in a treehouse has been a longtime childhood dream, it is time to cross it off your bucket list.

Old Pine Treehouse at The Mohicans
Old Pine Treehouse at The Mohicans

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort and Wedding Venue offer nine extraordinary treehouses you can book for an unplugged escape in the heart of the forest.

After our prior visit to the Tin Shed, we couldn’t wait to come back to experience the beauty of the Old Pine.

We want to thank Mohican Treehouse Resort for sponsoring this post. As always, my opinions are my own.

Where Is The Mohican Treehouse Resort

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort is in the heart of Ohio’s Mohican Valley. The resort sits on 77 acres of privately owned land only minutes from the Mohican Memorial State Forest.

The Mohican State Park is in Loudonville, Ohio. It is between Columbus and Cleveland, roughly 25 minutes from I-71.

Ohio treehouses are a great bucket list item.

TIP: Upon booking, the resort will give you detailed instructions on how to get to your accommodations. Be sure to print them out or save them on your phone because the area’s cell phone service is poor.

What Is The Mohicans Treehouse Resort

The Mohicans Treehouse Resort and Wedding Venue gives guests the unique experience of staying overnight in one of their signature treehouses. With an onsite event venue, it is a popular destination for weddings, reunions, and life celebrations.

The Mohicans offer more than treehouses for guests to overnight in! Guests can relax in one of their cozy cabins or rent one of their country homes for larger groups.

The Farmhouse is tucked away along the rolling country hillside providing families with a peaceful retreat.

What To Expect At The Old Pine Treehouse

Old Pine is a luxury treehouse nestled in a serene pine forest away from the hustle and bustle of life. Spend your time drinking coffee on a private balcony with sweeping views of the canopy. Curl up with a book in the cozy loft or indulge in copious amounts of s’mores around a bonfire.

The Old Pine Treehouse
The Old Pine Treehouse

Built in 2015, the treehouse was constructed with 100% reclaimed materials giving it an antique 1800s feel. Vintage accents include 100-year-old barn siding, hand-hewn beams, and a sliding bedroom barn door. As a luxury treehouse, guests will have a fabulous indoor bathroom/shower, deluxe linens, and a well-stocked kitchenette.

The treehouse includes a living room, bathroom, first-floor bedroom (1 queen bed), upstairs loft  (queen bed), small eating area, kitchenette, and outdoor shower (warm weather only). One of my favorite spots was the wrap-around porch, while my daughter loved the suspension bridge that led to the treehouse.

Fun Fact: Matthew McConaughey and his family stayed in the Old Pine!

Important: Check-out is before 11:00 am. There is NO internet/wifi available in the Cabins and Treehouses

Getting To The Old Pine Treehouse

Follow the directions the Mohicans give to avoid any possible construction and detours. Once on the Mohicans property, you will see a little gravel parking space between two trees that reads, “Old Pine Parking”.

Note that you cannot see the treehouse from the parking spot.

After you have parked, a gravel trail takes you into the forest and to the treehouse. The path to the treehouse is not lit, so bring a flashlight if walking at night. There are small solar lights to help guide you.

Planning Tip: If you don’t feel like carrying all your items individually down a long gravel trail and then up two flights of stairs, I recommend bringing a collapsible wagon. I foolishly just pulled mine out of the car, thinking I wouldn’t need it for this particular trip; I was wrong!

PRO TIP: PACK LIGHT!! Remember that you must carry your luggage up two flights of stairs and over the bridge. Pack only the necessities in a backpack and a small cooler to make it easier to haul.

A Look Inside The Old Pine Treehouse

Upon opening the front door, guests are ushered into the intimate living room with a rustic seating nook. A ladder leads to a bedroom loft overlooking the living room with a queen-size bed.

Venture into the charming bedroom on the first floor, which turns into a stargazing delight at night with a large skylight and vast picture window. There is a door that leads out from the bedroom to the balcony.

Step into the kitchen, where the cabinets were constructed out of reused, 100-year-old barn wood with accent rough-cut cherry doors and counters.  The kitchen was stocked with all the necessities needed to make meals. There is a mini-fridge, toaster oven, sink, hot plate for cooking, cookware, dishes, and cutlery. There is a microwave, a coffee maker, a teapot, and wine glasses.

Birdwatching while eating breakfast!

You can venture outside from the kitchen to the balcony and the outdoor shower. While the outdoor shower is seasonal, bathing outside in the treetops is a unique experience.

Pro Tip: I recommend easy meals that can be heated in the microwave, a charcuterie board, or sandwiches.

What To Bring To The Old Pine Treehouse

Outside of the regular clothing and toiletries, here are a few items to consider bringing along for your Old Pine Treehouse Rental.

  • DVDs. There is a TV in the treehouse; however, cable and satellite TV are unavailable.
  • FOOD! While coffee and coffee filters are provided complimentary, don’t forget additional food items such as creamer, sugar, spices, etc. Plan out your meals before arriving, as there are limited resturants nearby.
  • ICE and a way to store it. There is no ice maker in the treehouse nor a place to go and get ice. My recommendation: Depending on your stay’s duration, consider bringing a small cooler dedicated to ice.
  • Drinks. The treehouse has running water, but pack a few beverages if you fancy something other than tap water.
  • Firewood: The Treehouse does have a firepit and a picnic table. S’more supplies are always a must.
  • Things to Grill: The Old Pine does have a grill. Bring charcoal, foil, and all the fixings for a great BBQ.
  • Rainy Day Activities. Pack a game or two, a good book, a pack of cards, a puzzle, a magazine, and toys for kids in case of rain.

Final Thoughts

Sleeping amongst the trees is a novel experience that all ages can appreciate. While many will shy away from a price tag of over $400 a night, consider splitting it with another couple.

Another money-saving option is to follow the Mohicans on social media and sign up for a newsletter to receive last-minute discounts. There are times you can score a treehouse at nearly half off!

The kids adored staying in the treehouse. However, plan on scheduling activities or bringing activities because kids are not as interested in enjoying the peaceful serenity of the forest canopy as adults are. We would make them retreat to their beds for quiet reading time, so the adults could rest on the balcony and reset after a busy afternoon.

We would definitely do another treehouse adventure with Mohicans! With so many different treehouses, I want to stay in them all!

Things To Do Near The Mohican Treehouse Resort

Mohican State Forest

A highlight of any visit to the Mohicans Treehouse Resort is a visit to the Mohican State Forest. Hike along the gorge, climb the fire tower, then relax by a calming creek near the covered bridge.

Lyons Falls
Lyons Falls

A few of our favorite hikes include Clear Fork Gorge, Lyon’s Falls, and the Mohican State Scenic River. Note: Not all of these hikes are little kid-friendly. For little ones, I recommend the Gorge Overlook and The Covered Bridge.

The Mohican State Park is maintained by the Ohio DNR, which provides a map highlighting bridle trails, mountain biking trails, and hiking trails.

Mohican Adventures

Float down the river in a tube, drive go-carts or play a round of mini-golf at Mohican Adventures. Mohican Adventures is your one-stop shop for family fun in the Mohicans. Test your skills at their aerial course before hopping on a 7-mile canoe trip!

Tip: Save money by purchasing one of the packages for a whole day of family fun!

Go Swimming At Mohican Lodge

The Mohican State Park Lodge offers day passes for guests to use their amenities which include their outdoor and indoor pool. We spent the day at the pool, grabbed lunch in their dining room, and returned to the treehouse!

  •  Everything was well labeled, making it easy to navigate.
  •  They provided oils and basic spices—another thing to not worry about forgetting to pack.

Tucked away in the corner is a yoga nook ideal for kick-starting your morning. My child found the ballet bar the most entertaining, while I took advantage of the yoga blocks for some much-needed stretching.

The Hot Tub

One of the top reasons the Refreshing Mid Mod Retreat is one of the best places to stay in Bowling Green is its amazing hot tub. The 2021 Master Spas Hot Tub is located in the enclosed breezeway for maximum privacy and year-round enjoyment. Guests can open the garage door to the backyard to enjoy the elements without being in them.

The LED candles in the breezeway with the hot tub are a nice touch. It set the mood for a romantic evening. Towels are conveniently located next to the hot tub, making it easy to dry off if you forget your towel.

I would be doing the hot tub an injustice if I didn’t mention how nice this model was. My sore muscles took advantage of the powerful jets, there was a waterfall, and it could easily hold four adults comfortably.

A Backyard Paradise

We could not take advantage of the backyard space during our visit because it was winter. However, during warm weather, the backyard is transformed into an oasis with hammocks, a fire pit, and plenty of outdoor seating.

To get to any islands, guests will need a personal boat or a ferry. Miller Ferry only services Put-In-Bay and Middle Bass Island. The ferry service to Kelleys is called the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line and it travels between Marblehead and the island.

South Bass Island

South Bass Island is best known as Put-In-Bay. It is the most popular of Ohio’s islands, offering a variety of restaurants, resorts, bars, and attractions. It is best known for its nightlife, party scene, and golf cart rentals.

Middle Bass Island

Middle Bass offers a tranquil escape with just the right amount of adventure for those who enjoy a slower pace while traveling. The island is home to beautiful nature preserves, a handful of restaurants, and plenty of areas to catch a stunning sunset over Lake Erie.

Kelleys Island

A great mix of the South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island is Kelleys Island. As Ohio’s largest island, Kelleys Island offers a great combination of state parks, historic sites, wineries, and restaurants.

North Bass Island

North Bass Island is one of Ohio’s many islands; however, it is only accessible by private boat or plane ride, as the island has a tiny airport. The state owns a lodge that you can rent on the island to stay overnight.

Rattlesnake Island

Rattlesnake Island is only accessible to the members of the Rattlesnake Island Club. The club consists of people who own private homes and lots on the island. The name came from the rattlesnakes that formerly inhabited the island.

Why I Choose Middle Bass Island

For our girl’s getaway, we opted for Middle Bass Island for various reasons. The first reason is that the group of gals I was going with is more laid back. While we enjoy a good party scene, however we also value our sleep and relaxation time.

Another aspect is that it was more budget-friendly to stay on Middle Bass Island. We stayed at the St. Hazard’s Resort in a villa that was a fraction of the cost of a villa on South Bass Island.

Overall Thoughts: I found Middle Bass perfect for a group of middle-aged moms looking for a fun weekend away. Chartering between the Put-In-Bay and Middle Bass sealed the deal for us.

How To Get To Middle Bass Island

Your adventure to any of Ohio’s Islands will begin with a trip on the Miller Boat Line. Depending on the island you are visiting, ferries depart every 20 minutes to 2 hours. Check their schedule to plan out your trip.

Miller Boat Line
Miller Boat Line

There is a Middle Bass ferry every two hours, so getting to the ferry on time is imperative if you want to get to the island as planned. If you miss it, there are plenty of nearby wineries to visit while you wait.

Tips For Riding The Miller Ferry

  • Plan ahead. If you are taking a vehicle or camper, reservations must be made TWO WEEKS ahead of time.
  • Check ferry departure times for the island you are visiting and try to arrive fifteen minutes ahead of time. The ferries leave ON TIME. You will have to wait for the next one if you miss it.
  • You can bring all of your luggage on the ferry, including coolers, wagons, and food!
  • There is free parking for the ferry. There are multiple lots along the lakefront. There are also lots in which you can pay to park. Especially if you are in a rush to catch the ferry.
  • There are potties on the ferries and at the mainland dock.
  • You can buy tickets online or there. I recommend buying online.
  • If you have any questions about the ferries, call and ask. The Miller Boat Line staff were so helpful and assisted me in getting the information I was looking for.

Where To Stay On Middle Bass Island

Outside of condos and private vacation rentals, the St. Hazards Resort is the only place you can stay on Middle Bass Island. Even at St. Hazard’s, guests can reserve villas, cabins, chalets, or a spot at the campground.

St. Hazards Resort Villa
St. Hazards Resort Villa

We opted to rent a villa at St. Hazards through Airbnb, so we didn’t have to bring bedding. The villa was fully furnished and included access to St. Hazard’s tiki bar, restaurant, pool, and hot tub. Pulling up to the brightly painted villas adorned with fake palms and tropical decor made us feel we were on an tropical island.

Here are a few helpful tips when planning a visit to St. Hazards Resort

  • St. Hazards has the only shuttle on the island. It is $3 per person each time you ride it. This includes going to another restaurant or place on the island.
  • If you did not bring your car over to Middle Bass, you would need to call the shuttle to pick you up to take you to the resort.
  • The shuttle will drop you off at your villa. Once there, you can opt to rent a golf cart from the resort. You rent them by the restaurant. After doing the math, it’s cheaper to bring your car over.
  • St. Hazards has the only bar on the island that is open till 2 am. That means if there is live music, you will hear it in your villa till 2 am. We encountered this one of the two nights we stayed.
  • Bring stuff for meals. The villas all have kitchens. With few restaurant options on the island, having a few meals at the villa will help with the budget.

Things To Do On Middle Bass Island

The residents of Middle Bass are the true gems of the island. Each resident we had the pleasure of meeting was incredibly kind and full of hospitality. A lovely lady and her husband even invited us over for drinks on her gorgeous patio for a breathtaking sunset. Sitting around getting to know the two of them and hearing about life on the island was one of the top experiences during this trip.

In moments like those, I fall in love with traveling all over again. Unplanned experiences are often the most memorable, especially when it involves getting to know the locals.

Middle Bass Island State Park

Middle Bass Island State Park is home to a fabulous marina and harbor master’s building. The park also offers walking trails with interpretive panels on how the bass islands were formed, how the islands become know for their wine, details about historic Lonz Winery, and more.

Fun Fact: French explorer Robert de LaSalle first named the island “Isle de Fleures,” or Island of Flowers in 1679 because of its many wildflowers.

Check Out The Glacial Grooves

Middle Bass Island sits in the western basin of Lake Erie, the 12th largest freshwater lake in the world. It was formed when giant glaciers gouged and scoured the bedrock leaving deep depressions which filled with meltwater, creating the Great Lakes. Where Middle Island is located, the area is shallow with an average depth of only 25-30 feet.

You can see the glacial grooves that were formed during the glacial period at Middle Bass State Park in a small area near the picnic shelter. Don’t miss out on visiting the historic Glacial Grooves on Kelleys Island.

Lonz Winery

In the 1850s, the Lake Erie islands were purchased for grape production, giving them their nickname, “wine islands.” The Golden Eagle Winery opened in 1866, followed shortly in 1884, when an island resident, Peter Lonz, established Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island.

The Historic Lonz Winery
The Historic Lonz Winery

Golden Eagle Wine Cellars quickly became one of the largest wine producers in the United States, however, they were destroyed in a massive fire. The Lonz family then merged businesses with what was left of Golden Eagle Winery. Despite the nationwide prohibition of alcohol and the onset of the Great Depression, the Lonz business survived by selling bottles of grape juice with instructions for fermenting the juice at home.

Lonz Winery

The winery was placed on the national register of historic places in 1986. It remained a popular tourist attraction until a fatal collapse of a crowded terrace in 2000, forcing the winery to close. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources purchased the remains of the old winery along with 124 acres on Middle Bass.

Today guests to the historic Lonz Winery can take a self-guided tour of the remaining wine cellars, see artifacts from the days of wine production and learn all about the rich history of winemaking on the islands.

Island Grind

Directly next to the Lonz Winery is the island’s coffee shop, the Island Grind. Grab a cup of java and a chair on the winery’s patio overlooking the scenic lake. The Island Grind offers more than coffee drinks; they serve a variety of wines, beer, cocktails, and food. On select nights they have live music to enjoy out on the patio while sipping your favorite beverage.

The Island Grind quickly became one of our favorite spots on the island. Low-key vibes and good coffee were what we needed.

East Point Nature Preserve

You will find the East Point Nature Preserve at the far end of the island. The preserve is a wildlife refuge in which you will see various animals. We saw the lake Erie water snake, tons of birds, and an abundance of wildflowers. Bring bug spray, as the bugs are nasty and bite!

There is a small parking area that is perfect for golf carts. Follow the trail to the concrete pier overlooking all the different islands.

Plan A Day Trip To Put-In-Bay

Ohio’s Islands are a boater’s paradise with a massive lake, a variety of islands to visit, and easy access to restaurants and marinas. Those without a boat will have to rely on charters or ferries to get to the different islands.

Getting To Put-In-Bay From Middle Bass Island

Typically the easiest way to get from Middle Bass Island to the town of Put-In-Bay was by the Sonny S Ferry. The ferry would charter guests back and forth from Middle Bass to the boardwalk of Put-in-Bay.

NOTE: As of this article, the Sonny S Ferry is undergoing repairs and is not in operation. Check the Sonny S Boat Line for updates.

Inter Island Charters
Inter Island Charters

During the time the Sonny S Ferry is undergoing repairs, guests can still get to Put-In-Bay via Inter Island Charters. The charter will run out of the same area as the Sonny S Boatline. It is in the same area as the Miller Ferry, only on the opposite side of the building.

A Few Tips About The Charter:

  • They take cash or Venmo only. Buy your ticket at the window. The cost is $10 per person each way.
  • The charter boats are smaller than the Sonny S Ferry. Therefore not as many people can fit inside the boat, meaning lines do form. Get there early on weekends.
  • Each trip takes roughly 7-10 minutes to get to the other island.
  • Check their Facebook schedule for updated operation times. The boat will run in continuous intervals during these times.

Top Things To Do In Put-In-Bay

Put-In-Bay is known for its party scene, however, the party starts heating up after 6:00 pm. If this is not your scene, I recommend catching the ferry back to Middle Bass for a more peaceful evening. For those seeking a more lively evening full of entertainment, stick around the island and catch the later charter back to Middle Bass.

Rent A Golf Cart

One of the top things to do on Put-In-Bay is to rent a golf cart. It is awesome! Feel the wind in your face as you see the sights of the island, all while going a whole 10 miles an hour. Exploring all the entertaining areas of the island via golf cart is part of Ohio’s Island experience.

Rent A Golf Cart From Boathouse Cart and Bike
Rent A Golf Cart From Boathouse Cart and Bike

Boathouse Cart and Bike rents 2-passenger, 4-passenger, and 6-passenger golf carts at hourly or daily rates. They also rent bicycles. We rented our golf cart from Boathouse Cart and Bike, which is located a short walk from the boardwalk.

The golf carts are easy to use, and after a quick lesson, you are off exploring.

Note: You must have a valid driver’s license to rent and drive a golf cart.

Planning TipReserve your golf cart as soon as possible, especially larger ones. Weekends are popular on the island, as they will often be sold out of golf cart rentals.

Tour The Heineman Winery and Crystal Cave

Heineman Winery is a fifth-generation winery founded in 1888 and is the oldest family-owned and operated winery in Ohio. Tours are available to see the winery and learn how wine is produced and bottled. Guests can also add in a tour of the spectacular crystal cave.

The Crystal Cave is a fascinating part of the winery, discovered while digging a well in 1897! The Crystal Cave is the world’s largest celestite geode and one of three places on earth you can step inside a geode!

Tours of the crystal cave are roughly 10-15 minutes long as the cave is not that large. Keep in mind that guests must descend steps to get into the cave.

Planning Tip: Purchase the winery and cave tour combo. It even comes with a 5oz wine sample!

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Monument

The memorial was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. Guests can take an elevator to the top of the 352-foot column for spectacular views of Lake Erie. On clear days you can even see Canada.

Planning Tip: Purchase your tickets in advance, especially if visiting during a weekend. They tend to sell out quickly.

Scheef East Point Preserve

On the far eastern end of the island is a gorgeous lakefront preserve that is a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Put-In-Bay. Sit on the shore watching the waterfowl, listen to the waves lap upon the shore, or take a stroll along the trail.

Massie Cliffside Preserve

Get off the beaten path to see the best of the island. That means come prepared to do light hiking. We stopped at the Massie Cliffside Preserve and did a quick hike in flip-flops to one of the island’s most peaceful and scenic spots. The preserve offers gorgeous sunset views of Middle Bass Island.

Grab Lunch at the GOAT

We hopped in our golf cart in hot pursuit of the best culinary delights on the island. After quizzing the Middle Bass locals about the best spot to eat on Put-In-Bay, the Goat Soup and Whiskey came up numerous times. Good fortune was on our side as we did not have a reservation but could get a table at this popular restaurant.

Goat Soup and Whiskey
Goat Soup and Whiskey

Everything we had at the Goat was fabulous. Deviled eggs, Walleye Fries, Perch Tacos, and custom cocktails were just a few of the many menu items we ordered. The menu is upscale with items you will likely not see elsewhere on the island, such as Escargot, Lollipop Lamb Chops, and Oysters Rockefeller.

Planning Tip: The Goat Soup and Whisky does take reservations! If you plan on visiting during peak dining times, make a reservation.

Tour The Chocolate Museum

A small chocolate museum and cafe are directly underneath the Goat Soup and Whiskey. The chocolate cafe offers fresh-made candy and ice creams! The chocolate museum is free to the public and is home to various antiques showcasing the history of chocolate.

Point your golf cart south and head off to see the South Bass Island Lighthouse. Explore the lighthouse grounds, bring a picnic, or take a tour. The lighthouse was not open for tours during our visit, but they are offered through Ohio Sea Grant.

Grab A Drink At The World’s Longest Bar

Currently holding the world record for the longest bar is the Beer Barrel Saloon in Put-In-Bay, Ohio. Guests to the bar can go up to order all types of drinks. However, they are known for their Jell-O shots mainly because their Jell-O shots are served in a syringe! Grab a beer to enjoy on their massive patio, enjoy live music, or belly up to a portion of the longest bar in the world.

Frosty’s

An iconic staple on Put-In-Bay is Frosty’s. Known for its out-of-this-world pizza, Frosty’s also serves up a variety of fresh fruit cocktails and frozen drinks. Sit out on their patio, enjoy a spot inside the bar or simply come for the pizza!

Frosty's Outdoor Patio and Bar

After a full day exploring the island, we chartered back to our villa on Middle Bass. There were still tons of places on South Bass Island that we didn’t get to check off our list. That means we must plan a return trip to Ohio’s Islands.

Lancaster is in Fairfield County in southeast-central Ohio. It is roughly 30 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio. From my hometown of Cincinnati, it is approximately a two-hour drive. State Route 22 runs through the middle of town, while many will access the city from State Route 33.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites of Lancaster was the ideal accommodation for us. The hotel offers spacious rooms with a variety of options to choose from. We opted for two full beds and a pull-out couch. A little kitchenette was perfect for keeping cold drinks, heating up a late-night snack, and brewing a fresh cup of coffee.

Each morning, the Holiday Inn Express & Suites offers guests a complimentary hot breakfast that includes breakfast meats, eggs, and a pancake maker! Other breakfast staples such as cereals, fruit, yogurt, and bakery items were available.

The Holiday Inn in Lancaster, Ohio, has an indoor pool and fitness center for its guests to enjoy. However, my favorite part of staying at a Holiday Inn Express is that checkout is at noon!

The climb is moderate; however, keep in mind that you will be gaining 206ft in elevation in about .7 miles. Gay Fad Studios

Step back into the golden age of midcentury glassware with a stop at Gay Fad Studios. Don’t be deceived because the history behind this store just might be more impressive than the decorated glassware.

Gay Fad Studios was the company that shattered the glass ceiling of midcentury glassware which Fran Taylor started. Stepping into Gay Fad Studios today, you will step into the past by examining the incredible past glassware works of Fran Taylor and learn how the company tragically fell and was recently resurrected by Jason and David Annecy.

Fair warning: While browsing the store, you will want to leave with all the incredible glassware packed neatly into one of their darling bar carts.

A hidden gem in Springfield, Ohio, is the Hartman Rock Garden. This impressive rock garden was constructed by Ben Hartman, who was a self-taught artist. His rock garden began in 1932 after he was laid off from his job during the great depression. His hobby soon transformed his backyard into a masterpiece.

Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve : Springfield Ohio

Hike In The Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve- A Top Thing To Do In Springfield, Ohio

One of the most majestic hikes in Ohio is the Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve. Located just three miles east of Yellow Springs, Clifton Gorge features 268 acres of spectacular dolomite and limestone gorges. The rushing waters of the Little Miami River flow through narrow channels and cliff overhangs.

The overall hike was moderate, with plenty of wooden walkways and overlooks. Keep in mind that the gorge has very steep drop-offs so staying on the designated path is imperative. I would not recommend this hike for young children unless they can be strapped to you via a harness.

The ideal times to visit would be in the warmer months when wildflowers carpet the gorge or in autumn as the leaves set the gorge ablaze in radiant colors. However, our hike in November was still breathtaking.

Pro Tip: Take a picture of the trail map before venturing onto the trail. That way, you will be able to pull it up still if no cell phone service is available.
