Start with breathable, lightweight fabrics for the coastal regions and lowland jungles, where humidity and heat dominate. Clothes that wick away moisture and dry quickly are particularly beneficial in these environments, allowing for comfort during any activity.

A reliable waterproof jacket is a must-have, as rain can come unexpectedly almost anywhere in Costa Rica, especially if you’re visiting during the rainy season from May to November. Look for a jacket that is both breathable and waterproof to ensure comfort during rainforest hikes or when caught in a tropical downpour.

A lightweight, waterproof day pack is invaluable for carrying essentials while exploring, especially if you are going whitewater rafting, cayoning, or tubing. Conversely, sturdy sneakers with breathable fabric can be a more comfortable option for lighter treks and city explorations. These shoes provide the necessary support for casual walks and are easier to pack than bulky boots. An essential part of your packing list should include a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapplication throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating, is necessary to maintain effective protection against sunburn and potential long-term skin damage.

Beyond sunscreen, your sun protection arsenal should feature sunglasses with UV protection. Additionally, incorporating a wide-brimmed hat into your attire can provide much-needed shade, not only for your face but also for your neck and shoulders, areas that are often exposed and sensitive to sunburn.

Costa Rica’s lush landscapes and warm climate are a paradise not only for travelers but also for mosquitoes and various insects. A reliable insect repellent is indispensable to keep these unwelcome companions at bay.

Tip: Insect repellent can be pricy in Costa Rica, so I recommend packing your own instead of purchasing it there.

My longtime followers know that my family loves to get sick the second we are out of the country. That is why packing a well-stocked first aid kit and sick kit is your first line of defense against minor injuries or ailments that can occur during your adventures.

This kit should include adhesive bandages of various sizes, antiseptic wipes for cleaning wounds, and antibacterial ointment to prevent infection. Additionally, incorporating anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relievers, and antihistamines can address common travel-related issues like headaches, muscle aches, or allergic reactions.

Also, consider including medications for stomach upset or motion sickness, as changes in diet and long travel days can sometimes lead to discomfort. One of the go-to items in my sick kit is chewable Pepto tablets, which have been life-saving when the stomach bug hits.

For those with specific medical needs, carrying a sufficient supply of prescription medications is crucial. These should be kept in their original containers with clearly labeled prescriptions to avoid any confusion or problems with customs.

Travel insurance is an often-overlooked component of travel preparedness that can be a lifesaver in medical emergencies or unforeseen travel interruptions. Ensure that your policy covers medical treatments abroad and possible medical evacuation, giving you peace of mind as you explore Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the locations of clinics or hospitals in the areas you’ll be visiting, and carry a list of emergency contacts, including the local emergency services number and the contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate. This preparation allows you to access help quickly should any health or safety concerns arise during your journey.

A lightweight, quick-dry beach towel is a must for those lounging days on the sand or after a refreshing dip in the ocean. These towels take up less space in your bag and dry much faster than traditional options, ensuring you’re always ready for your next adventure.

Along with your towel, a durable beach bag will keep your belongings together and sand-free while you enjoy the water or relax under the palm trees. Opt for one that’s easy to clean and has enough pockets to organize your sunscreen, sunglasses, and other beach essentials.

Lastly, don’t forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated under the Costa Rican sun. Hydration is key in the tropical climate, and having a bottle on hand means you can refill it throughout the day, keeping you ready to tackle whatever adventure comes next. This item aligns with Costa Rica’s eco-conscious ethos, reducing plastic waste and supporting the country’s environmental sustainability efforts.

Other Important Items To Consider

While the US dollar is widely accepted in Costa Rica, having local currency on hand is never bad. The Costa Rican Colón is widely accepted and preferred in many areas. We often used colons to pay the parking lot attendants and when we stopped at local fruit stands.

International SIM Cards with data are imperative when traveling abroad. They allow you to make phone calls, access the internet, and view maps.

Passport Requirements For US Citizens

US Citizens visiting Costa Rica will need a valid passport or travel documents. It is recommended that your passport does not expire within six months.

Visitors to Costa Rica must also present a return ticket to the country of origin or onward travel plan that includes the next destination.

Proof of funds for at least $100 per month of proposed stay.

Note: A Yellow fever vaccine will be required if arriving from certain countries in South America or Africa.

Costa Rica Packing List

While planning for your tropical escape to Costa Rica, there is more to pack outside of your beach and resort wear. Coming prepared with the necessary documents, travel gear, and essential items will keep you from making a mad dash to the gift shop and paying higher prices for everyday items.

Putting together a travel plan can help in packing. Start by placing important items such as passports, printed e-ticket custom forms, medical insurance, travel insurance, mobile phones, phone chargers, keys, money, and wallets in a designated area in your carry-on baggage.

It is a good idea always to pack an extra pair of clothes, prescription medications, and contact lens/glasses in your carry-on in case your flight gets canceled or delayed.

I typically pack a swimsuit in my carry-on when traveling to tropical destinations. This way, if my luggage is lost, I will have something to wear to the pool or beach.

• Sunscreen, but check to make sure it is reef-safe sunscreen.
• Insect Repellent, bring if you are venturing out on a hike, a zip line adventure, or anything outside of water.
• Bring an Underwater Camera if you plan on snorkeling or doing fun activities involving water. We have this particular waterproof camera, fell in love with it, and ended up buying all the extra accessories that come along with it.
• Quick-dry beach towels if staying at Airbnb or other lodgings that won’t have them available.
• E-reader or tablet and charger
• Water resistant backpack
• Beach bag / dry bag
• Headphones
• Travel-size umbrellas or ponchos, especially if visiting during the rainy season.
• Baby wipes
• Toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant

• Body Lotion
• Lip Balms
• Aloe Vera in case of sunburn
• Small travel towel
• A waterproof phone case allows you to take your phone in the pool, the ocean, etc.

Packing List For Kids In Costa Rica

• Great things to pack that don’t take up much space are a memory game, Go Fish, Melissa and Doug Activity Books, Usborne Activity Books, sticker books, small action figures, Hot Wheel cars, coloring supplies, Look’ n Find books, and a tablet loaded with their favorite shows and games.
• Don’t forget to pack water shoes, sandals, and gym shoes for the kids!
• Lots of sunscreen, and don’t forget to reapply frequently; the sun is intense.
• Kids do exceptionally well with Mosquito Repellant Wristbands.
• Band-Aids, you know they will need forty of them for that single scratch.
• Goggles, floaties and sinkies for the pool.
• Brightly colored swimsuits. If traveling with multiple kids, get them all the same bright colors, so they are easy to spot in the pool and at the beach.
• Check with your lodging to see what is available before packing. Depending on where you stay, some baby/toddler supplies could be provided. For example, some hotels offer complimentary pack-n-plays, strollers, high chairs, bottle warmers, etc.
• A portable pop-up beach tent is a good idea if you planning a trip to a beach that doesn’t offer shaded canopies or loungers.
• A stroller could come in handy if you don’t want to carry your little one around. A hiking carrier could also be handy for tired little legs on hikes.
• A Children’s Wellness Kit: Be sure to pack plenty of kids ibuprofen, Tylenol, a thermometer, diaper cream, Aquaphor, any other medication that could be needed.
• Sun hats for kids.

Whether this is your first or tenth trip to Costa Rica, it is also good to remember that Costa Rica has almost everything if you forget something important at home. Going to a new destination can be intimidating, but once you see those beautiful beaches and lush rainforest, you will be planning a return visit.
